The Legal Deposit is an administrative act whose mission is to collect bibliographic, sound, audiovisual, electronic material or made on any medium. Of course this includes CD Audio, DVD Audio, and DVD Video.
In Spain this management is decentralized in a provincial way. That is why the works have a code of this style: D.L .: B-xxxx-2012.
Where: B are the initials of the province (such as vehicle registration numbers. Example: B: Barcelona; M: Madrid; BI: Bilbao ..)
D.L .: Abbreviation of legal deposit.
Xxx: it is a correlative number given by the Administration.
2012: It is the year of the edition: 2009, 2010, 2011….).
Legal Deposit is regulated by law. Its objectives are, among others:
- The compilation and preservation of a national collection of bibliographic materials of all kinds.
- Statistical control of editorial production.
- The constitution of regional or local bibliographic collections.
The Legal Deposit is the obligation, which emanates from the Order of October 30, 1971, (pdf, 149 kB) by which the Regulations of the Hispanic Bibliographic Institute are approved, to deliver in the corresponding registry copies of publications of all kinds and in any medium for public distribution, rental or sale. Subsequently, said Order was modified by the Order of February 20, 1973 (pdf, 85 kB), by which some articles are modified. A new draft law is currently in process by the Government that should end with the publication of a new law after its relevant approval in Parliament.
